Architectural Residential
Whangarei
The Challenge
This architecturally designed home in Whangarei is a striking composition of multiple pavilions, varying rooflines, and large glazed openings that blur the boundary between inside and out. Delivering the structural engineering for a home like this requires more than technical competence. The structure has to be invisible, the engineering has to work around the architecture, and the solutions have to be buildable without adding cost or complexity the client did not sign up for. The site added a further layer of difficulty, sitting on liquefiable ground that required a carefully considered foundation solution.
The EAP Solution
We worked closely with the architectural designer to develop a structural system that supported the design intent at every turn. Steel portal frames were used where large open spans were needed, and beams were carefully integrated into the ceiling structure to accommodate the bespoke louvre roof system and the varying ceiling heights across the different spaces. On the ground, we designed a TC3 Firth rib raft slab to suit the liquefiable site conditions, specifying fibre-reinforced concrete to achieve the polished concrete floors the client wanted while avoiding the significant additional labour cost that conventional reinforcement would have required. The result is a home that looks effortless from the outside and is engineered to perform for the long term.
Key Engineering Elements
- TC3 Firth RibRaft foundation slab for liquefiable ground conditions
- Fibre-reinforced concrete slab with control joints and saw cuts to minimise cracking in polished concrete floors
- Full dwelling bracing design, including two steel portal frames
- Beams and lintels integrated with a bespoke louvre roof system
- Structural solutions to accommodate varying ceiling heights throughout
